Thursday, April 22nd is Earth Day and is in its 40th year and Dallas has local spots to help you celebrate! Here is an itinerary from yours truly on how you could spend Earth Day in local Dallas.

To start off Earth Day, head on over to Pegasus Plaza and join in the street fair festivities! There will be food, activities, exhibits, education about the environment, a fashion show with designs from recycled materials, and more! So wake up and make your way to Earth Fest 2010 in Downtown Dallas!

After you start your morning off at Pegasus Plaza, DART on over to a “green” movie premiere at Mockingbird Station. DART can take you straight to Mockingbird Station from Pegasus Plaza in green style.

What is better than going to a local Dallas market and seeing the premiere of a groundbreaking film in honor of Earth Day? And the best part is it’s FREE!

On Thursday, April 22nd, the Angelika Theatre at Mockingbird Station is hosting the premiere of A Chemical Reaction, a film about the dangers of chemicals and pesticides on the environment and our well-being. It's sure to be interesting and eye opening!

Also, before the premiere, Mockingbird Station is hosting the spring Farmers Market series! You’ll be able to sample and see local farmers, artisans, and growers! How cool is that!?

On December 26th, 1811, the Richmond Theatre burned to the ground. A standing-room only audience of 600 people had gathered that night to see a touring company present a billing of several different pieces.

During The Bleeding Nun, a short play of haunted star-crossed lovers, the fire began. Of those 600 in attendance, seventy died--many women and children, many trampled in the panic that ensued. The dead included the newly-elected Governor, George W. Smith, who died after saving his wife's life. The incident made headlines as far away as Germany and gave rise to the Second Great Awakening. Weaving together a narrative out of more than twenty different characters in his signature lyrical-prose style, Clay McLeod Chapman constructs a narrative of the lead up to and aftermath from the Great Richmond Theatre Fire in the play Volume of Smoke. Based on interviews conducted with survivors of the fire in an unpublished 19th-century manuscript, Volume of Smoke is a beautiful, moving, surprisingly funny voyage into the heart of disaster and our responses to it.

A Window Into the Architect's Mind: The 35th Annual

Ken Roberts Memorial Delineation Competition

For centuries, architects have used visual imagery to assist in the design process—from Egyptian temples sketched on papyrus and Michelangelo’s perspective drawings to “back of the napkin” sketches and 3-D modeling. These visual representations may be as conceptual as a first sketch or as detailed as construction documents and design drawings. These drawings from their mind’s eye assist in the translation of idea to reality. They help us to understand the architect’s vision, and, through the alteration of these drawings, architectural ideas find form.

Since it began almost 35 years ago, the annual Ken Roberts Memorial Delineation Competition has grown from an event that recognized hand-drawn renderings of local architects to a competition that encompasses architectural delineations made in a variety of media by students and professionals the world over. Organized by the Dallas chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the “KRob” is the longest-running architectural drawing competition anywhere. The competition is named in tribute to Ken Roberts, the Dallas architect who organized it. Roberts died in 1974 at age 34.

This exhibition features both winners and finalists from the 2009 competition on the DCFA gallery wall and the plasma screen television.

RAIN: A TRIBUTE TO THE BEATLES

This tour is in Dallas until the end of the weekend, so see it while you can!

RAIN covers the Fab Four from their very first Ed Sullivan Show appearance through the Abbey Road album, through the psychedelic late 60s and their long-haired hippie, hard-rocking rooftop days. RAIN is a multi-media, multi-dimensional experience...a fusion of historical footage and hilarious television commercials from the 1960s lights up video screens and live cameras zoom in for close-ups.

For the four longtime band members – Joey Curatolo (Paul McCartney), Joe Bithorn (George Harrison), Ralph Castelli (Ringo Starr) and Steve Landes (John Lennon), with a little help from their friend Mark Lewis (keyboards, percussion) – the music is first and foremost. For more than two decades, RAIN has distinguished itself by focusing on details, always being faithful to The Beatles with the ultimate goal of delivering a perfect note-for-note performance. This is just too awesome to not tell you guys about! If you have not already heard about it, The Dallas Flea is the perfect place to go to tomorrow! You will be able to shop ‘til you drop local Dallas style.

Lisa Petty, from NBC online, says it best in her article, Feather Your Nest at The Dallas Flea. This flea market is something you won’t want to miss out on!

Petty quotes Brittany Edwards, who came up with the idea, that ““There are 50 vendors and all are Texas-based creatives and companies,” Edwards explains. “We have everything from children's toys to luxury furniture and large-scale oil paintings.”

And the list doesn’t stop there. Flea vendors will also tempt shoppers with gourmet popcorn, truffles and cupcakes. Great gift items like candles and stationery are ideal for stuffing stockings or the office Secret Santa exchange. As an added bonus, Edwards promises “tons of free giveaways” and a “flea” bag for the first 100 shoppers to arrive.

Admission is only $5, and in another untraditional flea market move, most major credit cards will be accepted for vendor purchases. Trés convenient!

White Rock Lake Through the Looking Glass- Dan Barber

Bath House Cultural Center

Art photographer, Dan Richard Barber (former writer for The Dallas Morning News and Dallas Times Herald), examines the beauty and enchantment of White Rock Lake and its neighboring communities with the aid of alternative photographic processes in this unique exhibition.

In the 20-plus years that Mr. Barber has lived in East Dallas, he has always recognized White Rock Lake as one of his favorite places to visit. Like many others, he has walked its shores with his dog and bicycled its trails. In the exhibition, the photographer presents images of the lake and its natural and man-made structures, captured with alternative media, which includes solarizing and scanning pinhole photographs and other interesting processes. Because of the unusual development processes, the images ha e an eerie, otherworld feel -- a view of the lake not commonly seen by those who love it.

About the White Rock Lake Museum: The Bath House Cultural Center is the home of the White Rock Lake Museum. The museum's mission is to preserve and present the human and natural history of White Rock Lake Park and its surrounding environment. The White Rock Lake Museum was inaugurated in September of 2004.

16th Annual El Corazón exhibition

Bath House Cultural Center

In 1993, exhibition curator, Jose Vargas, conceived the idea of organizing an art exhibition in Dallas that would give artists an opportunity to explore various artistic interpretations of the human heart. Since then, this passionate and delightfully eclectic art show has featured diverse creations inspired by the heart (El Corazón), an important symbol in Mexican and Latin American art, and a significant theme in western culture. As a result of Mr. Vargas' original idea, more than 900 local and regional artists have been included in his show throughout the years. This year, this popular show features the work of more than 40 artists from the DFW Metroplex and other Texas cities. The artwork included in El Corazón includes paintings, sculptures, photography, and mixed-media art.

The annual 5K is a celebration of everything that is Mardi Gras and new this year everything that is NBA Jam Session. That is right the annual Mardi Gras Run will be a part of the NBA’s All-Star Weekend festivities.

Help support the North Texas Food Bank this Valentine's Day weekend by making a one-of-a-kind, edible Valentine! From 12:00 pm until 5:00 pm, children can decorate large Valentine's Day cookies baked fresh by La Duni Latin Kitchen for $5 each, with the proceeds benefiting the North Texas Food Bank. This one-day event takes place between Macy's and Nordstrom, in the hallway between LOFT and XXI Forever.

Students from the Dallas Academy of Texas Ballet Theater School will present a special Valentine's Day performance beginning at 2:00 pm in NorthCourt, which is located between Nordstrom and Macy's. Their Valentine's Day performance will feature the Youth Ensemble as well as advanced students.
Texas Dallas Theater School offers classes in ballet, jazz, tap and modern, from the pre-school level through to the pre-professional level. Students from the school have the opportunity to perform with the professional company in their annual production of The Nutcracker. The school is located at 670 N. Coit Road in richardson.
